Anonymous asked: I'd like to ask you your opinion on masters of science programs in forensic medicine. I'm very interested in one offered at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, but unsure what the job outlook is like for people with an masters in forensic medicine versus those with a medical degree in pathology or forensic pathology. I feel slightly overwhelmed and mostly lost.

What am I doing?
Nothing is wrong, I just feel like I’m always trying to compensate for something. I just feel uncomfortable. But I’m not sure why.  The older I get, the more I realize that finding out who I am is a never-ending process that ultimately keeps me young. Learning and challenging yourself is what keeps you fresh. It’s also what keeps you stressed.

Medical Advice From The Peanut Gallery
Random Person: What are those?
Me: Pills for my anxiety.
Random Person: You don't need those. You just have to do yoga and meditation. You know, breathing exercises. You don't need to be drugged up with chemicals.
Me: Oh, when did you graduate?
Random Person: 2010.
Me: From medical school?
Random Person: -dumbfounded look-
Me: -smile, exit-

Lifting the veil
It’s been roughly two months since my relationship with Josh dissolved (granted, dissolve sounds much more gradual and peaceful than the abrupt end I ultimately chose).  In these two months I’ve learned a great deal about myself and about a wide variety of people. I’ve made unexpected connections with men and women and have further developed an idea of the person I am, and who I...

Just A Quick Note to Atheists (From an Atheist) →
Being an atheist does not erase privilege. This includes white privilege. This also includes cis privilege, CNDP privilege, and het privilege. Seriously, being an atheist does not erase your white privilege. Criticizing exclusively (majority) non-white religions is racist. This includes Islam. The existence of white Muslims does not invalidate this point. Black Christianity is not always...

On narrowly escaping assault
I’m still shaking.  I drove downtown to meet a friend at the local hookah bar and parked my car in a lot behind the building. Between the lot and the building there is a well-lit alley which serves as a connection point between the parking lot and main street. As I made my way to this alley I noticed a man walking past it on the main sidewalk. This man was carrying a shopping bag of...

Great Thinkers of the Past Rap Battle - Pt I.
Every ho thinks that my beard is charmin’ Salt and pepper locks, I’m fucking Darwin. I get bitches like finches — Galapagos, All the turtles think that my swagger’s the most — Dominant, fool. Paris, February 8, 2012 – The Syrian regime is conducting a campaign of unrelenting repression against people wounded in demonstrations and the medical workers trying to treat them, the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said today. While MSF cannot work directly in Syria, it has collected testimonies from wounded patients...

*Attention People Who Enjoy Reading
Branch to the Sun by Evan Mielke is a collection of five short stories from a stunningly talented up-and-coming author. You should definitely give this a read. Message from the author Hey all! This is my first self-published collection of five short stories, Branch to the Sun.  It’s a varying mix of sci-fi and human relations.  I’ve been told that I write like a (much) less talented David...

*Life meaning something that I want to happen miraculously and within the next 10 minutes. Own everything from JCrew (including the men from the Q&A wearing the Ludlow suits…if you haven’t looked, you should). Become infinitely wealthy and unendingly generous with said wealth. (Also: PUPPIES AND GOATS.) Order a plate of crab rangoon and eat them in my bed. Understand physics. ...

huntingforcherubs: The decision of your organization to end your partnership with Planned Parenthood and to defund the breast screenings of thousands of women is a distinct reflection on the cowardice of your leadership and Komen Foundation’s utter lack of regard for the health of all women. The Bitch, The Bombshell, and The Badass
Last night the “wife” treated me to dinner and a showing of Beauty and the Beast in 3D and afterwards her, myself, and our other friend were joking around after the movie in the lobby of the theatre. After a few snarky comments were thrown back and forth, the wife and I playfully ganged up on our friend and we gave him the nickname “The Bitch.” We all laughed for a moment...

J.A.M.A. : Here I come. (Hopefully)
I’ve been working on a study at the medical examiner’s office concerning opioid analgesic overdose fatalities in my state for the past 10 years ever since I started my position this past summer. 9 months of tediously sorting through and quantifying toxicology data for every death in the past ten years has led me to this point, here. 9 months ago he explained the idea he had for the...

To the followers I just lost over my last post:
That’s what you un-follow me for? I wasn’t legitimately wishing death upon someone rather expressing frustration (a very human emotion) with an unnecessary loss of property.

Death is easy.
When people ask me about what I do, one question seems to come up more than anything else and that is: “How do you deal with it? Isn’t dealing with the dead so closely on such a regular basis an emotional drain on you? How can you be okay after all of that?” What people don’t seem to understand is that there are a million things worse than death. There are a million...

Had a fun night with another delightful Australian randomly in town on business.  Only this time he was a former professional soccer player and 6’5”.  Still had a silly name like the last one. That must be an Aussie thing. . The “Down Under” jokes have not ceased.

As some of you have probably seen already, “Dear Scarlet” has been getting a TON of new followers due to this recent post: “Dear Scarlet, You wanted a mohawk. We let you get one. It’s as simple as that, and it should be.” And I just now decided to head over to the main blog to see what it’s all about.  The header reads, “This is a project to our daughter,...

Oh, I don’t know. Being a woman, perhaps? Being aware of human rights issues? Not simply accepting culture in its processed form but picking it apart to arrive at its core to reveal the ignorant and out-dated dogmatisms that still hold men and women to separate and extreme sexist expectations?  Just because I’m paying attention to these issues does not mean that they alone define...

RAPE IS MORE COMMON THAN SMOKING IN THE U.S. →
Today an article published in on Significance Magazine’s web site, a publication of  the American Statistical Association and Royal Statistical Society, compared these rates to those of smoking – 18.3% of women over 18 reported being sexual assaulted in their lifetime while 17.4% of women reported smoking. Let consider this as we set health priorities. violenceandscience: Listen, folks. I...

I am frighteningly good at finding people.
Remember the Australian businessman from the other night? Turns out he’s been trying to find me since then and my best friend JUST NOW checked her voicemail and found out he’s been trying to locate me. He doesn’t have a number in town (he was using another guy’s phone at the bar) since he’s just in on business for 5 days and so I decided to do some detective work...
